In 2022, Bulgari introduced the thinnest mechanical watch ever produced the Octo Finissimo Ultra; limited to only 10 pieces. This title was previously held by Piaget’s Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch which measures at two millimeters in overall thickness. Bulgari’s latest innovation, the Octo Finissimo Ultra, surpasses all expectations by boasting an overall thickness of only 1.80mm. Using a similar approach to the Piaget AUC, Bulgari consolidates the components onto a single plane, employing the case back as the movement plate. This design choice allows for a captivating view of the entire going train, which now occupies a more prominent space compared to the AUC.
The main focal point is the large, solitary mainspring barrel situated at the upper left, showcasing an intriguing addition – a QR code etched onto its cover. Upon scanning this code, watch owners are directed to a video specifically linked to the watch, accompanied by an NFT that certifies its uniqueness and includes additional valuable assets on the blockchain. The implementation of a QR code linked to an NFT that is etched directly onto the watch dial sets this timepiece apart from any previous endeavors.
With the limitless potential of NFTs and blockchain technology, many other watch manufactures are following suit. Recently, Italian watch manufacturer, Panerai announced that beginning October 3rd, every Panerai watch sold will include a NFT-based “digital passport” that authenticates the watch as well as provide all documentation. This innovative approach ensures the watch’s provenance and uniqueness are preserved on the blockchain. With this move, Bulgari, Panerai, and many other watch manufacturers are embracing the potential of NFTs to add an additional layer of exclusivity and value to their luxury watches. It demonstrates the growing trend of NFTs entering the luxury watch space, where traditional craftsmanship harmonizes with cutting-edge technology to provide an enhanced ownership experience for discerning collectors.
